The Polar bear and fur seals’ predator/prey relationship sets them apart from other bears. In the fall months, a seal cuts 10-15 holes in the ice using their sharp claws on their flippers. They keep these holes open all winter, even in ice that is up to 6 feet thick! These holes are used to get in and out of the water or take a quick breath in between dives. Polar bears can smell a seal’s breathing hole more than half a mile away. One of the polar bear’s hunting strategies is to wait near these holes to spring a surprise attack. With so many holes for the seal to choose from, being at the right hole at the right time can become a frustrating challenge!
